Recent deployments In April 2011 five Argo floats have been deployed in the Atlantic after the 342nd cruise of the fisheries research vessel Walther Herwig III. The scientific crew under chief scientist Dr. Reinhold Hanel from Institute of Fisheries Ecology studied during this cruise the reproduction biology of the European eel in the central Sargasso Sea. The following two week crossing from Bermuda to Bremerhaven was used to conduct further studies on possible drift routes of the eel larvae in the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Current towards European coasts. In addition, BSH used the crossing to deploy five floats in the Atlantic. The map below shows the deployment locations. |
